Conceived and curated by Peter Bruun, Everyone an Artist asserts creativity as innate to our humanity—that indeed, everyone is an artist.
Everyone an Artist placed hundreds of works by students attending 13 Baltimore-area colleges and universities side-by-side with art by Denise Tassin, whose multi-faceted and open approach to art-making stands as a model for living creatively. A series of nine exhibitions, each focused on a different type of creative impulse, took place in 2009 in the galleries of regional partner institutions.
THE ART OF COLLECTING
Gormley Gallery at College of Notre Dame of Maryland
How our accumulation of stuff takes on meaning and says things about who we are. Selections from artist Denise Tassin’s vast collections of objects and materials, and a variety of college student works from numerous Baltimore-area universities and colleges.
I REMEMBER MAMA
Art and objects tinged with nostalgia, harkening back to childhood memories. The exhibition featured a selection of small sculptures and constructions by Denise Tassin, and work by students from numerous Baltimore-area universities and colleges.
THEY’RE PLAYING MY TUNE
Drawings and mixed-media works by Denise Tassin and college students from across the Baltimore region created directly from listening to music or in response to other forms of art and performance.
WE’RE NOT ALONE
Art that happens when individual creative efforts enlist natural forces as part of the process. The exhibition included a series of “worm drawings” by Denise Tassin shown alongside abstract works by UMBC and Towson University students, as well as machine-made drawings designed by JHU engineering students.
AN EVERYTHING INSTALLATION
Artist Denise Tassin worked with current students enrolled in the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Post-Baccalaureate Program to create a “project room” where participants added to the installation in any way they pleased, and nothing was rejected out of hand.
ART FROM ART
Artists inspired by one another, across disciplines and in surprising directions. An exhibition in the UMBC Student Center Gallery of a suite of 10 prints by Denise Tassin displayed alongside words by students from JHU’s Writing Seminar.
MORE THAN ONE
An exhibition of individual works of art made up of multiple repeating parts, with works by Denise Tassin alongside projects by college students from Coppin State University, the Community College of Baltimore County, Morgan State University, and other Baltimore-region colleges and universities.
BEST DRAWING
Students taking college-level drawing classes across Baltimore shared what they considered to be their “best” drawings.
SANDBOX
Works made when individuals work side-by-side, back and forth, with one another, joined together in creative play and discovery.
