Talking Pictures

An exhibition at The Park School of Baltimore organized by Peter Bruun during his tenure as Exhibition Educator at the school. Middle School students in various subject matters created curriculum-based projects inspired by the art of Ken Aptekar

Students in Language Arts, Visual Arts, Drama, and Social Studies classes completed projects inspired by the art of Ken Aptekar, whose practice involves copying historic works and placing text across the art work’s surface—wry commentary injecting heavy doses of the personal. Aptekar’s art proved perfect for this age group, where developing identities and self-centered ways of experiencing the world are the norm. Aptekar, who spent a day visiting the school, was thrilled to see how his art inspired students to create new works as commentary on his, thereby generating additional layers of meaning.
